Nathuram Godse :

Nathuram Vinayak Rao Godse was born on 19 May 1910 into a Brahmin Family in Baramati, Bombay ( Maharashtra ).

His Father's name was Vinayak Vamanrao Godse and his Mother's name was Laxmi Godse. Vinayak was a postal employee and Mother Laxmi was a homemaker.

The childhood name of Nathuram was " Ram Chandra ". His three brothers and one sister died in their infancy before he was born, He was brought up as a girl for a few years until his younger brother was born. The reason behind his unusual brought up was: His parents were afraid of losing him like their other children. They thought, All those happened was because of the curse on their family.

School Life :

Nathuram Godse attended the local school at Baramati through Fifth standard after which he was sent to live with his aunt in Pune and Studied in an English Medium School. He was a great follower of Gandhi and his Philosophy during his schooling.

Reason of school drop out :

1) He was inspired by the G.D Savarkar and admired his Hindu Nationalist philosophy of Hindutva. It was the time he found to know the result of Gandhi's Non-cooperation movement. How Gandhi had stopped that movement. He eventually became a part of Hindu Mahasabha to create a collective "Hindu" identity as an essence of Bharat.

2) Bhagat Singh, Rajguru, and Sukhdev were sentenced to death in the Lahore conspiracy case and order to be hanged on 24 March 1931. Since the large crowd was out to protest all over the country, The schedule was moved forward by 11 hours and the Three were hanged on 23 March 1931.

It was the time while the whole nation wanted to save these three superheroes of India, Gandhi did not respond to their vows only because they were not following Gandhi's non-violence path to  Independence. If Gandhi would want, they could be free from death.

Gradually his belief from Gandhi and Gandhi's " Non-violence" philosophy faded away.

Political Career :

  • Nathuram Godse dropped out of school and joined Hindu Mahasabha as a social activist.
  • 1932: Godse joined the RSS at the age of 22 at Sangli ( Bombay) as a Karsevak (Groundworker)
These were the right-wing organizations of that time.

Godse used to write articles to oppose Gandhi and his philosophy ( Nonviolence way to achieve freedom from British rule ).

Godse was following Golwalkar and Savarkar's Hindu ideology which was just opposite to Gandhi's non-violence ideology.

  • 1934: On 25 June 1934, Gandhi was supposed to deliver a speech at Pune Corporation Auditorium, He was traveling in a procession of vehicles with his wife and other Co-workers. There were two similar cars. In the first car, Chief officer of that corporation, some policemen and some co-workers were there while Gandhi was in the 2nd car with Kasturba Gandhi. Luckily, they got late at a railway crossing and the first car was blown up by a bomb when they arrived.

  • 1940: Nathuram Godse formed his own organization " Hindu Rashtra Dal ".
  • 1946: He left the RSS over the partition of  India issue, However his brother Gopal Vinayak Godse claimed, He never left RSS.
  • 1947: The Indian Independent act was passed in 1947, which main aim was to divide the whole county into two nation based on the religion. This act had made the whole country to do protest. Gandhi moved to Delhi to accompany and control the violence between Hindu, Muslim, and Sikh communities.
India Independent was a kind of power transfer from Britishers to Indian Politicians. To fulfill the desire of having power, Politicians instigate people keying religion and made India divide into two Nations based on religion.
DARK DAY :

On 30 January 1948, Gandhi walked up four steps towards the prayer mandap, New Delhi. Godse was there before Gandhi reached there. He just came forward and offered him pranam in the return Gandhi did the same. Godse asked him, You are late today for the prayer! Gandhi just smiled and replied, Yes I  am late today. It was the moment while Godse took out his Gun and fired 3 shots from the point-block range immediately. Soon thereafter, Godse was arrested by the military and police personnel present there and taken away from the public.

Gandhi was taken back to his room in Birla House, New Delhi, where he died.

COURT JUDGEMENT :

08 NOVEMBER 1949: Godse was put on trial at the Punjab High Court, Peterhoff, Shimla.
  • The court found 7 accused of Gandhi's assassination.
  • Nathuram Godse and Narayan Apte have hanged death under section 120B of the Indian penal code.
  • Justice Atma Charan passed his final order considering statements of 149 witnesses.

  4. Shankar Kistaiya ( Domestic Worker, Employee of Digambar Badge )
  5. Gopal Godse ( Brother of Nathuram )

Conclusion :

After the death of Gandhi, Home Minister Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel banned RSS and Hindu Mahasabha organization.
